Aquaponics systems have been referred to as the most sustainable food production unit anyone can set up. Aquaculture and hydroponics are combined to make a thriving ecosystem. The reason why a system like this is called sustainable has something to do with the symbiotic relationships between the marine animals and the plants in the system.

The goal is to create a system where animals and plants could thrive for a long time. Animals provide plants with the materials needed to produce food, and in return, the plants create fresh leaves that fish can nibble on. Waste and byproducts are used over again in constructive ways. Plants give the oxygen, which is a byproduct of photosynthesis. The system thrives even with little maintenance.

Supplies are essential in aquaponics. It can be easy to implement methods and strategies as long as the materials are there. But the supplies you need may differ according to the size of your set up. As you know, the aquaponic system comprises two planes, one being the aquaculture part and the other being the hydroponics part.

Common to most aquaponic systems are the following:

- rearing tank – where fishes, crayfish or prawns will thrive.
- unit for waste removal – for debris like unconsumed fish food
- A unit for biofiltration – for the growth of important nitrification bacteria responsible for converting ammonia into plant-usable nitrates
- hydroponic subsystem – where biofilter byproducts are dumped
- pumping mechanism – maintenance of water flow

If there are tools that work several functions, space can be saved. Filters and other implements are needed to provide space for fish to live and plants to thrive.

When in the unusable form ammonia, the substance becomes toxic to the aquaculture system, so fishes need space to swim away to when the ammonia content of one section is too high. Ammonia is the substance that is used by plants to make food. Plants can grow by ammonia nourishment and enough sunlight. Nitrification is a process that you should be familiar with if you want to build an aquaponics system. A good breeding ground for beneficial bacteria is needed so that the ammonia can be converted by these microorganisms before they can be consumed by plants.

Here’s a website that will tell you more about the aquaponics is sustainable aquaponics is sustainable

Heartworms are a health issue proprietary to dogs. They may be more severe than the owner may think they are. In fact the disease may be transmitted quite easily, but it is very difficult to get rid of it. Some of the medication that has been invented may not be affordable, therefore veterinaries advice for preventive measures rather than other options. They originate from mosquito bites. Whenever an infected mosquito bites the dog, the eggs incubate around some of its internal organs, including the heart and the lungs, until they develop to maturity and start affecting the dog.

At the beginning, the eggs are transferred to the blood vessels and find room for incubation in the veins that lead to the heart. One of the internal symptoms of heartworms in the dog is that the internal organs start to give away. Eventually, they completely shut down, presenting more problems for your pet. These worms can grow to lengths of 12 inches if not taken care of immediately, but this happens over a long period. The full replication of the worm’s effect on a dog can be recognized after seven years.

Symptoms in the dog do not show until the disease is in its later stages. The dog will not recognize the presence of the worms. One of the more visible symptoms is the inactive nature of the dog. It does not wag its tail nor does it play as often as it used to play. This is usually the case when the worms have surrounded the areas around the lungs. They cause difficulties in breathing and pumping of blood to the rest of the dog’s vessels. Another common symptom is the dog’s excessive coughing. This is also a sign of the dog’s lung’s being infiltrated by the worms. It is better for any owner to prevent the dog from acquiring the disease than trying to cure it.

The guppy is a tropical fish that is single handed one of the most prolific breeders for a novice aquarium enthusiast. You might even call it a missionary fish for converting so many people into aquarists. Guppies have an infinite variety of colors and many would argue that they are the interesting of all aquarium fish to have. Each male is like an individual finger print of color unique unto itself.

The guppy is a very fertile livebearer, is a very active fish that can do well in smaller aquariums as well as large ones. It is robust in that it can live in poor water quality that is both foul and of poor temperature, with a range of 35 degrees in the range of 65 to 100 with the favourable range being 74 to 82 degrees. It is also a peaceful fish in that it doesn’t pick fights or become aggressive. Another defining point is that it doesn’t become ill easily. All these positive points add up to a very dependable fish to keep for a beginning aquarium owner.

When a female guppy is pregnant she gets a dark spot near her anal fin. When she starts to bulge she is near delivery. So if you want to get a deal on starting an aquarium with this kind of fish then look for a pregnant guppy at your local fish store and you will have many more than the purchase of one very shortly. Guppies breed more heavily in warmer water above 76 degrees and slow to near stop at 67 or lower degrees.

Guppies eat a variety of foods and you should try to introduce as much a variety as you can. If you want larger guppies then keep all the environment of the aquarium in favourable condition, including lots of live foods. Younger females having a first litter may only deliver 6 or 7 young while older larger females can have as high as 50 or more.

Almost everyone who has never had an aquarium will still know of the guppy and goldfish as a tropical fish and quite often when they see an aquarium will call just about any fish a guppy just out of ignorance. That just proves how common they have become to the world of aquariums.

If you are thinking of setting up and aquarium a guppy fish or two would get you started and keep you interested as you build your prowess to handle even more delicate tropical fish.

In this blog post we are going to discuss the common term “herding dog” used among dog owners, dog sitters, and Seattle dog boarding facilities. The term “herding dog” is often thrown around as an identifier for particular breeds of dogs. However, the actual meaning behind the term is often overlooked or in some cases even misused.

Herding is a term used to describe the behavior of dogs that help in the movement of cattle, sheep, goats, reindeer, and even poultry. In all these cases the dog is using a modified predatory behavior to control a group of animals. Scientist think this behavior was evolutionarily advantageous to dogs because it allowed their ancestors to successfully trap and kill prey through teamwork. Humans selectively breed for herd control in dogs while actively removing the hunting urge to actually kill the prey.

A herding dog is usually associated with specific dog breed like the Border Collie, Australian Cattle Dog, and otheres. Common traits for all these dog breeds are their weatherproof double coats, stamina, and high degree of intelligence. This is not to suggest that the ability to herding is found in these dog breeds only or that all dogs of a particular breed can herd. Herding is usually determined individually over the lifetime of a dog through rigorous training and discipline. The first step is for the dog to take a “herding instinct test” by professional handlers to determine the potential of an individual dog. This test looks at the dog’s behavior around livestock and their ability to take commands, remain focus, and not attack. If the owner gets satisfactory results or likes what they see then the dog might be trained to herd for a career.

Do you own a herding dog? What do they do with their talents? We want to hear from you!

Salt Water Aquariums Are Not Cheap To Maintain

If you have a salt water aquarium, you probably found out pretty fast that this hobby is not cheap! And the natural thing to do is to try to find ways to stretch your hobby budget as far as it will go. In order to do this most effectively, you have to know where you can cut corners and where you absolutely cannot. One of the most important pieces of equipment is the protein skimmer. Many hobbyists have gone the cheapest route possible with this piece of equipment and have found out that this simply will not work. Buy a cheaper brand of salt, cheaper nets and other things that are not directly linked to water quality and you will be just fine. Buy a cheap skimmer and you will be fighting an uphill battle to keep your fish and coral alive and well.

Reef Octopus Skimmer- Size Matters

There are two things that go into the selection of the right protein skimmer. They are size and quality. Every skimmer is rated for a certain size tank. Actually they are rated “up to” a certain size tank. That means you can use a skimmer for tanks up to 100 gallons on your 50 gallon tank. If you get a skimmer rated for a 50 gallon tank it might work, but it just does not have the power to do the same job as the skimmer meant for larger tanks. It pays to spend a little more for the next size up.

Reef Octopus Skimmer- Quality Matters

The other thing to consider is quality. All skimmers are not created equally. They all look very much alike, but search any forum and you will quickly see there are huge differences between brands. So the task is to find the most quality for your money, and this is where the Reef Octopus Skimmer comes in. While not the cheapest brand, this is certainly not the most expensive, far from it. It is hard to find a bad review about one of these skimmers, and that is true even when compared to much more expensive brands. If money is not an issue, go buy that ASM or Deltec protein skimmer. But if you are like most of us you want to get good quality without breaking the bank. This is where Reef Octopus Skimmer comes in.

Offering several different classes, or types of skimmers, you can find whatever you want while staying in the brand. If you want a needle wheel skimmer, no problem. Check out one of the Reef Octopus Recirculating Skimmer models for one of the newest trends in skimming. Models are available for in sump or hang on the back mounting options, and some of them even can accommodate both of those needs.

When it comes to keeping an aquarium, there are just some types of fish that shouldn’t be kept as pets – especially by the novice aquarist. The reasons vary, but in most cases, the fish either get too large for the average home aquarium, or they require very specialized care. Here are a few of the top fish that really don’t belong as a pet in an aquarium.

1. Freshwater pufferfish.

Although freshwater puffers are really cute, they don’t make good aquarium pets if they are going to be kept in a community fish tank – they truly are a specialist fish. In general, freshwater puffers However, if you’re willing to feed them the appropriate diet (i.e. not feeder goldfish), and give them a tank of their own, then they can provide you with many years of enjoyment.

2. Common goldfish.

The common goldfish is often placed in a fish bowl, which is truly a barbaric practice – a bowl just can’t stay clean, no matter how often you change the water, and it cannot support a healthy biological filter. The common goldie can get larger than a foot, and they should be left to outdoor ponds or appropriately sized tanks.

3. Common plecos.

Most people get a pleco to help clean up the algae in their fish tank. However, depending on the species, this is a very bad idea. For instance, some plecos aren’t solely herbivorous fish, and in some instances, like the common pleco, they can reach lengths of 2 ft and larger.

4. Pacu fish.

The pacu gets huge – like throw it in a frying pan and serve your family for dinner huge. Some specimens have been known to exceed 3 ft. In addition to their large size, pacu fish are also schooling, which means they not only require a small pool for a tank, but they also need at least 6 other fish for company.

5. Red tailed catfish.

RTC’s are very beautiful fish from the Amazon, however, they really have no place in the home aquarium – they get the size of a small child, and there is no way to prevent them from growing into giants.

6. Green spotted puffer.

This is a very common fish in many pet stores, and unfortunately, it’s almost always labeled as a freshwater puffer. However, they are not a freshwater fish – green spotted puffers are brackish water puffers. This means that they require marine salt in their water – not just aquarium salt.

There are of course exceptions to the rule – some people really can provide for the above fish, and a few do make great pets if all of their basic needs are met. However, none of them make a good impulse purchase because you will definitely get more that you bargained for.

If you have taken a dive into the saltwater aquarium hobby, you probably already know that you will be buying more equipment than you thought and spending more money than you thought. And one of the things that you are going to realize is really a requirement in this hobby is a protein skimmer. My hope for you is that you not follow in the footsteps of so many people who enter this hobby and try to purchase the least expensive skimmer they can find. It simply does not work and you will be heading for frustration, more expense, or even worse an early exit from the hobby.

If you take any advice at all it should be advice about the protein skimmer you choose. The right skimmer can make or break your ability to maintain a healthy environment for your marine creatures, and let’s face it, they are too expensive to leave to the chance that comes with cheap equipment.

The first thing you have to do is determine which of the two basic types of skimmers is right for you. Those are the hang on back, or HOB type skimmer, or an in sump skimmer. An HOB skimmer is exactly what it sounds like in that it is a skimmer that hangs on the back of your tank. An in sump skimmer is, you guessed it, the kind that goes into your sump, which is generally a smaller tank kept hidden inside the stand your main tank sits on. There are a lot of reasons why an in sump skimmer is generally better, but that would be an article all on it’s own.

So, once you know which type of skimmer you can have it comes down to determining which of the many available skimmers you can afford and will be a good fit for your tank. There are a lot of brands of protein skimmer on the market, and it can be hard to know which are good. Over the years the same names seem to float to the top when a list of the highest quality marine equipment is listed. One can’t miss is a Reef Octopus skimmer. This cmpany makes a model for virtually any situation, and they make both in sump and HOB versions.

As you do your research, try to resist the temptation to spend the least amount of money and instead try to focus on getting the most quality for your dollar spent. If you look at it in that way you are more apt to get a piece of equipment that will do the job well and last a long time.

My children had been clamoring for a fish tank ever since they saw fish tanks for sale at the local pet store. After doing some research on the Internet, they brainstormed and came up with ideas on how to choose the perfect one.

Size and Material: There were fish tanks made of glass, acrylic, fiber glass, and even concrete (best suited for an outdoor garden). The children decided that fish tanks are best kept outside, yet protected. The patio of the house had a covered corner where it could be kept on a stand away from Ginger the cat’s hunting forays. They chose a rectangular glass one, with a pagoda like canopy made out of wood, but with ample space between the top of the tank and the canopy to allow in air. Fish tanks must be chosen according to the size of the fish that are to be put into them!

Fittings: Fish tanks need to be connected to an electrical plug point for the aeration system to be working at all times. A water source nearby is useful when fish tanks have to be cleaned. Dechlorinated water should be used or if this is not possible then there should be a method used to remove the chlorine. Ensure direct sunlight does not fall on fish tanks as this can lead to the growth of algae.

Filteration: Aeration is very important in fish tanks. Fish get their oxygen from the water, and the water must be constantly aerated by mechanical means. Usually an aerator is connected to an electrical point and fitted under the layer of gravel in fish tanks. This is kept working throughout and the bubbles springing to the top is a good indicator that the aerator is functioning normally. Ammonia build up occurs in fish tanks because of fish droppings and rotting fish food. There are certain bacteria which work on breaking down the ammonia, which is toxic to fish, but this takes time so it is better to leave the aerator on in fish tanks for about a week, before the fish are introduced.

Accessories: Perfect fish tanks contain accessories which look pleasing and are beneficial to the fish at the same time. These could be pebbles or gravel at the base with small uneven shaped rocks placed strategically in the fish tanks so that fish can hide or use these as resting points. Plants are best bought from the stores and placed in fish tanks, rather than brought in from the garden. Small non toxic plastic frogs or other aquatic baubles can also be added. Some people like to light up the fish tank by using colored aquarium lighting on the sides of the fish tank.

Maintenance: Factor in ease of maintenance while choosing the perfect fish tank. Fish tanks should be easy to clean and maintain. Make a chart and schedule activities like daily feeding, weekly chores of cleaning the glass and ensuring that the aerator is working, to monthly changes of water and cleaning the tank. This will keep the fish healthy and alive and afford everyone hours of serene viewing.
